5 Skin Commandments to Survive the Summer

As the days get hotter, our summer essentials are front of mind. From ensuring we consume enough water to being hair-free and sun smart, these are your skin commandments for summer 2018.

1. Hydrate

Made up from two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, creating its chemical name H2O, this may well be the most valuable product when it comes to achieving skin that looks plumper and livelier. Given it usually appears in first position on a  product's ingredient list (remember that ingredients are listed in order of the concentration), the necessity of this clear fluid speaks for itself. Since skin is our largest organ, with water making up 64% of it, it is our main barrier against the outside environment. "To keep your skin strong yet supple, you should be drinking at least 1.8 litres of water a day," says Dr Libby Weaver. Carry a water bottle everywhere you go and remember that if you’re already thirsty, then you’re already dehydrated - so drink up.

2. Exfoliate Well

Exfoliation is an often missed step in many beauty routines, yet it is a key commandment to ensuring great summer skin. Exfoliating once a week with a coffee-based exfoliant is my go-to for soft skin. However, be sure not never exfoliate, shave and then head straight into direct sun exposure. Given the top layer of your skin is new, exposing it directly to the sun for an extended period, can result in harmful UV rays which damage your new cutis. This affects collagen levels and elastin fibers - which is a big no-no. Exfoliation is best done 12-hours before you shave and 24-hours before direct sun exposure.

3. Shave With the Right Razor

Lucky for us, Schick Hydro Silk Disposable razors are changing the game this summer, making their results-driven razor our new handbag essential. In order to maintain a long-lasting shave that lasts more than a day, you need a smooth shave with quality blades that are changed regularly. Hydro Silk is a winner in our books, it’s easily disposed of, and it provides enduring results. There is no need to carry the same razor around when you can change razors regularly to maximise your time hair-free and ensure your razor hygiene is up to scratch - no one like nasty ingrown hairs. Whether you're dashing between the gym and work, the beach and drinks with the girls or you're just tight on time, Hydro Silk is your summer essential.

4. Mind Those Locks

We all worry about sun protection, but what about hair protection? Like our skin, our hair is prone to sun damage, often resulting in split ends and hair that breaks a lot easier. When you can’t avoid sun exposure be sure to cut down on hair styling tools, instead opting for air drying - especially now the days are warmer. I opt for a spray like Oribe’s Gold Lust Hair Oil, it styles while deeply nourishing to strengthen your hair, plus it has UV protection, which mean no split ends for you. #Winner.

5. Cover Up

Easier said than done, especially if you're after a tan, which is the majority of us, (if we're being honest). I once met a woman who looked 25 years old but, after discussion, admitted she was 43 years old! She had the most stunning, collagen-filled skin I've ever seen, and she was twice my age. Her secret? Sunscreen, a hat, and a pair of large sunglasses whenever she went outside. An easy, stylish and simple commandment to stay protected under the summer sun this season.
