NZFW: 24 Hours Before a Show With a Lead Makeup Artist
We went backstage at with Smashbox Cosmetics Lead Pro Artist, Sam Hart as she prepared for the Andrea Moore show at NZ Fashion Week 2017. From meetings to countless face charts, pizza, and a lot of product, Sam's schedule 24 hours before a show is not for the fainthearted.
ONE DAY BEFORE THE SHOW
We view the collection before meeting with Andrea and pull together some ideas for the makeup looks. We then meet with Andrea and her chosen model to trial the look!
Once the makeup look is signed off, the hair team arrives and works through their selected look with Andrea. This is to make sure the whole look comes together well.
I create face charts detailing the application and key products for the Andrea Moore looks. This guides all artists across each look, and because there are 4 different make-up looks in this show, there are a lot of face charts - haha.
Next up its time to brief the team of pro artist which we do at our NZFW boot camp! Here we have our full team and models to practice the looks. This is essential to ensure we nail them on the day! Of course, we have pizza - so we all survive!
The makeup kits take a troop to pack up because we have A LOT of products. This is done in advance but we do one final check before we head home for the night.
DAY OF THE SHOW
It’s an early start to get my face ready. We have a lot of media interviews and photo opportunities backstage throughout the day - so I need to look camera ready too!
I do one last check of the makeup kits before loading up the car and heading down to Fashion Week.
Meet the whole team for a briefing.
Arrive backstage and set up the makeup stations and brace ourselves for the swarm of models to arrive.
Models arrive. Some start off in hair, and some come to us for makeup – it’s a balancing act in order to get them all done in time.
Once all models are finished we go backstage for final touch ups before they walk the runway. This is always the most exciting time to see the whole show come together.
We now pack everything down and get ready for the next show!
